Marnie Poncy
Lessons to be learned from the Schiavo Case
Marnie Poncy received her BSN from Georgetown University in
1971 and her JD from Nova Southeastern University School of Law
in 1988. Prior to becoming a lawyer, Ms. Poncy’s nursing career was
in prenatal health with an emphasis on high risk pregnancy, genetic
disease and babies born seriously ill or dying. Because of her interest
in bioethics issues developing throughout medicine, she became a
lawyer and practiced in the private sector for more than a dozen
years before developing the concept of the Bioethics Law Project.
The Bioethics Law Project is now into its fourth year having been
expanded into a collaborative with Hospice of Palm Beach County,
Inc., Hospice by the Sea and the Palm Beach County Medical Society
as the Bioethics Collaborative for End of Life Education, Outreach
and Advocacy. This Collaborative is funded by a $450,000 grant
from the Quantum Foundation and is, as far as we know, a nation-
wide first.
